Following on from the first five diploma lines being delivered in September 2008, the Government has just awarded ‘gateway 2’ entry for Norfolk to deliver in September 2009.

These new ‘lines of learning’ include

Environmental and land-based Studies

Hair and Beauty Studies

Business, Administration and Finance

Manufacturing and Product Design

Hospitality and Catering

Schools and colleges forming ‘consortia’ across the country, including 9 in Norfolk will deliver the 10 diplomas.

Some schools and colleges have opted to become members of multiple consortia to ensure as wide a coverage of the lines of learning as possible.

There will be seven more diplomas on offer over the following two years.

To teach the Diplomas the consortia have to meet very strict criteria, including availability and access to teaching facilities, staff training and levels of employer engagement in existence between education ad industry.

Some consortia have been unsuccessful and are having to make improvements to their application, but will be able to reapply at a later date.

Diplomas focus on employability and life-skills and prepare young people for the world of work.

Students will be able to study ‘more traditional’ qualifications alongside the Diplomas, thus allaying original fears that they were ‘too directed’ towards industry.

The Exchange has been working with a number of employers and consortia on the Construction and Built Environment Diploma and, more recently, the Creative and Media Diploma.

This has involved giving employers general advice and information on aspects of the Diplomas and how best to link with education to make them ‘more employer focused’ within the classroom.

We will also be soon delivering to the Norfolk consortia a pack of resources developed across East Anglia, to aid teaching of the Diplomas.
