What are they?

Diplomas are new qualifications being introduced in selected areas of the UK this year. They have been designed by employers and offer qualifications at three different levels. By 2013 they will cover 17 employment sectors.

Five Diplomas are being introduced this year:

Construction and the Built Environment
Creative and Media
Society, Health and Development
Information Technology
Engineering

Diploma levels will be:

  • Foundation (level 1 – for students for whom GCSE is not appropriate))
  • Higher (level 2 – for those expected to get A* to C grade GCSEs)
  • Advanced (level 3 – for high achievers who either want to go on to higher education or to develop wider workplace skills)

What’s different about Diplomas?

Students will get a mix of theory and practical learning in a variety of settings.
The theory will include basic skills – English, Maths and ICT. But they’ll also have 10 compulsory work experience days, develop their employability skills and have the chance to produce an extended project.
They will also be able to choose specialist options and more qualifications, such as vocational qualifications, GCSEs and A levels.

Where will they study?

Students won’t be studying totally in school or college. They will work in different environments, such as with local employers or other settings for specialist parts of their course.

What happens after the Diploma?

Students can go into work, apprenticeships, training, further or higher education

What’s special about Diplomas?

They have been designed and supported by employers so they give employers influence in shaping the workforce skills they will need in the coming years.

Students are expected to benefit because they will have the skills for and direct knowledge of the work they eventually want to do
