Young Engineers for Britain

Event locations: motor dealerships in Norfolk

In the Spring Term, Young Engineers for Britain events are hosted by motor dealerships in Norfolk.

The Exchange (Norfolk Education Business Partnership) runs the Junior Engineers Knex Challenge in Norfolk.

The challenge is promoted nationally by Young Engineers, www.youngeng.org and Hasbro and is aimed at young school students aged between 7 and 11.

This year 126 teams representing 63 primary schools took part in "design and make" activities using sponsored Knex engineering construction kits.

The challenges combined engineering skill and creative ability.

Tom O’Connor, Chief Executive, The Exchange said: “We have had excellent support from the schools in this year’s Knex Challenge with a record entry of teams. The students have all worked very enthusiastically and come up with some amazing design solutions."

 2008 Norfolk Knex Finalists

Winners Elliott Sheppard and Thomas Dowden, of Bressingham Primary School, and runners up Tommy Paine and Thomas Hassey, from Caston Primary School, went to Chelmsford on July 3 to represent Norfolk in the regional finals of the Knex Challenge.

To qualify for the regional finals, the young engineers, working in pairs, had an hour to design and build a model out of Knex of an amphibious vehicle that could search for and safely carry a World War II bomb, like the one found off Felixstowe last month. They then had to give a short presentation to explain their design.

Sixteen teams took part in the county final at the Hethel Engineering Centre on Tuesday, May 6.

Elliot Sheppard and Thomas Dowden said: “We are really happy. Our ambition now is to get to the national final at Duxford.”

Simon Coward, Hethel Engineering Centre, who judged the Norfolk final, congratulated all the finalists for their excellent teamwork and problem solving capabilities.

He said: "The winners planned their project superbly and refined the design several times before coming up with the final product.”
