Now in its fifth year, this popular project offers young people the chance to make a radio programme which will be aired in November through the studios of Hospital Radio Norwich. Schools and organisations working with young people, are allocated an hour in which they can broadcast using a mixture of live and pre-recorded materials. This enterprising activity gives young people a wide range of life skills developing organisational skills, time management and problem solving. It enhances communication skills for the whole team and is a great boost to confidence and self esteem! The students are involved in planning the content, researching content and recording.. Cross-curricular activity is encouraged – jingles can be written and performed by students, English and ICT involved in scripts. Some schools will be using Exchange Radio as part of the new Creative and Media Diploma. Some use it for ‘listening and speaking’. Others use it for enterprising learning as creativity, using initiative, decision making and team working - just some of the skills required to shape a broadcast.
“We couldn’t do it without Hospital Radio Norwich”, said Lesley Bambridge. “The HRN people are all volunteers and we take over their studio for the broadcast days. "We fund the OFCOM licence which will allow us to broadcast for four days in November, from November 3-6 inclusive. "
If you live outside of reception range you can listen online by going to: http://www.exchangeradio.co.uk and if you want a souvenir of the experience there will be a CD of the whole four days available soon
