The latest Exchange Annual Report (2007) has just been published.

Message from the Board of Directors

In 1905 George Bernard Shaw wrote that: ’the reasonable man adapts
himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt
the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends upon the
unreasonable man.’

Today, just over a century later, we find ourselves living in an era when
being unreasonable is frowned upon; society expects convention and bureaucracy demands uniformity.

Yet innovation and progress depends more today than perhaps ever before on individuals challenging the status quo.

The Exchange occupies the middle ground, linking together the evolving conventions of education with the increasingly free thinking world of employment.

Through The Exchange, young people and their teachers gain valuable insights into the concept of enterprise; enriching their education, focusing their ambition and supporting their journey to independence.

Bridging this cultural divide is always a challenge. Both schools and businesses at times struggle to fully appreciate the importance, to find the time and resources and to view enterprise education as more than a passing fad.

The imminent launch of the first 14-19 Diplomas demands greater flexibility, closer collaboration and a deeper understanding of each others’ world.

This year has seen tremendous change within The Exchange as the organisation strives to enable, support and develop more effective employer engagement between our schools and businesses.

There has been greater recognition of the importance of the work we do. There has also been tremendous support for the team as they grow, adapt and respond to the demands and opportunities the new 14-19 agenda places before us all.

Their achievements, individual and collective, must be recognised and celebrated. Their enthusiasm and commitment to positive change also merits acknowledgement.

For The Exchange, as well as for enterprise in education, 2007 has been a good year.

2008 will be even better!

(Robert Ashton, Chairman of the Board of Directors.)
